A lens is a sheet of plastic (without holes) that fits in the frame of a fluorescent fixture between the lamp and the room below, or a translucent plastic piece (without holes) that wraps around a non-recessed fluorescent fixture.
The most common lenses found in commercial buildings are "Prismatic" lenses. This is the industry standard lighting diffuser found in just about every troffer and surface mount fixture. It combines the maximum efficiency and light spread with low cost for excellent economy & performance.
